Antara River Cruises has once again made waves in the world of cruise travel with the launch of their latest Catamarans in Odisha. Following the resounding success of the MV Ganga Vilas, which debuted as the longest river cruise in 2023, these two-suite, eco-friendly vessels—MV Mahanadi and MV Bhitarkanika—are poised to redefine exploration in the Bhitarkanika mangrove wetland of Odisha.
Spanning 672 square kilometers within the estuarine region of the Brahmani-Baitarani River systems and their tributaries, Bhitarkanika is celebrated as India‘s second-largest mangrove ecosystem, surpassed only by the Sundarbans. The Antara Catamarans will promise an unforgettable journey through this enchanting landscape, unveiling its hidden treasures along the way.
Bhitarkanika, spanning 672 sq km, is a vital sanctuary with a rich history. Crafted by the ancient king of Kanika, it served as both a defense against sea raiders and a haven for royal hunting expeditions. Accessible via the Khola gate, meaning ‘dig the earth’, its intricate waterways host mangroves, creeks, and mudflats, home to diverse species like the Sundari tree and saltwater crocodiles. This ecosystem safeguards coastal areas, nurturing wildlife including pythons, king cobras, migratory birds, deer, and wild boars.
The MV Mahanadi and MV Bhitarkanika offer 3 night/4 day itineraries – Amazon of the East sails every Friday and Cruising in Bhitarkanika every Monday. Embarking at Gupti, just over a 3 hour drive from Bhubaneswar airport, tourists can cruise through Dangamal exploring Bhitarkanika and then returning to Gupti. The cruise is priced at INR 25000/- per person per night on twin sharing/double occupancy.
“A cruise on a catamaran provides a more intimate setting, often just 4 people who can explore the area exclusively with personalised service and flexibility. It’s a quiet, simple though rich journey through the wetlands, mangroves and dense forests of the Bhitarkanika National Park along with visits to local villages and temples known for their historical and cultural significance and beaches dotting the coast,” said Raj Singh, Chairman, Exotic Heritage Group, promoters of Antara River Cruises.
“However, dipping into these intricate ecosystems comes with the responsibility of protecting them and as you are aware, Antara River Cruises is both community inclusive and sensitive to the planet’s challenges. Our catamarans present the first hybrid solar electric and fuel powered cruise in India,” added Singh. Measuring 17 meters in length and 6 meters in width, the catamarans offer a harmonious blend of comfort and elegance. Each suite features sweeping windows, private bathrooms, and luxurious amenities, providing guests with a tranquil sanctuary amid the wilderness. With fully air-conditioned interiors and spacious common areas, the Antara catamarans redefine the notion of luxury cruising in Odisha.
Moreover, guests can partake in immersive excursions led by expert guides, including birdwatching, nature walks, and cultural encounters with local artisans.
Recognising the importance of environmental stewardship, Antara River Cruises has raised the bar with their innovative approach to sustainability.
The Antara Catamarans represent India’s first hybrid solar electric and fuel-powered cruise vessels, showcasing a commitment to reducing carbon emissions and minimizing ecological impact. Additionally, the company has implemented measures to eliminate single-use plastics, employ bio-chemical toilets, and purify onboard water, further ensuring the protection of delicate ecosystems.
